About AVP: AVP is a victim services, public advocacy and community organization agency primarily serving the LGBTQH communities of NYC. Founded in 1980, AVP addresses the pervasive problems of violence committed within and against LGBTQH communities including domestic violence, sexual assault, hate violence, HIV-related violence and police misconduct. AVP provides direct client services as well as community education and public advocacy.

Title: Education and Hotline Coordinator

The New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project (AVP) is seeking a Education and Hotline Coordinator. AVP envisions a world in which all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-affected (LGBTQH) people are safe, respected, and live free from violence. AVP’s mission is to empower LGBTQH communities and allies to end all forms of violence through organizing and education, and support survivors through counseling and advocacy.

Each year, the Education and Training Institute (“the Institute”) trains more than 4,200 people at over 125 trainings with community members, police, court staff, district attorneys' offices, rape crisis centers, domestic violence agencies and other mainstream health and human service providers. The Institute also serves as a clearinghouse for the most up-to-date information, studies, articles and curricula on the issue of violence, and is a research resource for those interested in studying violence against or within LGBTQH communities.

AVP operates a free bilingual (English/Spanish) 24-hour, 365-day-a-year crisis intervention hotline that is staffed by trained volunteers and our professional counselor/advocates to offer support to LGBTQH victims and survivors of any type of violence. AVP receives more than 2,800 calls a year—an average of one call every three hours. Callers receive immediate crisis counseling and on-going short or long-term counseling and other supportive services, including police, court and social services advocacy, and accompaniment.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
AVP is looking for an energetic and experienced individual to coordinate of AVP’s Education and Training Institute and AVP’s 24 hour, bilingual (English/Spanish) hotline. This person will coordinate the Institute’s training requests, develop and conduct trainings, train and support staff trainers, maintain and analyze training evaluations, manage and conduct training for AVP’s hotline volunteers. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to curriculum research and development, program coordination, program evaluation, volunteer coordination, and leadership development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Development and Coordination:

Training

  • Coordinate training requests and maintain the Education and Training Institute’s Training calendar
  • Develop training curricula and materials
  • Conduct research on best practices within training and education methods and current trends in violence within and against LGBTQH communities including but not limited to hate violence, sexual violence, and intimate partner violence to incorporate into training curricula
  • Conduct trainings and workshops for multiple audience
  • Work with relevant AVP staff to refine staff facilitation and curriculum development skills

Hotline

  • Coordinate hotline volunteers
  • Recruit and train hotline volunteers

Administrative

  • Monitor deliverables and outcomes for the Education and Training Institute and the hotline
  • Manage and analyze the Education and Training Institute’s data for AVP’s impact evaluation and grant reporting needs
  • Report on government and foundation activities as needed
  • Attend community meetings, staff meetings, AVP events, and professional development trainings and seminars as needed

Organizational Relationships

  • Reports to the Deputy Director in charge of Community Organizing and Public Advocacy
  • Works closely with staff in the Community Organizing and Public Advocacy Department, and the Client Services Department

Other duties as directed by supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3 years of curriculum development experience for varied audiences including community members and direct service providers
  • 3 years of training facilitation experience for varied audiences including community members and direct service providers
  • Excellent public speaking and training skills
  • 2 years of project management or project coordination experience including reporting on government and foundation activities, program design and implementation, and program evaluation
  • 2 years of volunteer coordination experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of anti-oppression and social justice frameworks
  • Excellent computer skills, database experience, and knowledge of Microsoft Office required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Proven ability to maintain clear professional boundaries
  • Demonstrated professional experience with LGBTQ and HIV affected communities and LGBTQH violence prevention
  • Demonstrated commitment to working to end violence within and against LGBTQH communities
  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualities and Skills:

  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Quantitative and qualitative research experience
  • 1 - 2 years of community organizing or public advocacy experience
